  • The Jewellery Show wrapped up its activities at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on March 4, following the closure of the Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show at AsiaWorld-Expo on March 2, 2024.
  • These dual events attracted around 81,000 attendees from 137 countries and regions, highlighting their status as top-tier global events.
  • A survey conducted at the event indicated that more than 60% of the industry stakeholders expect a rise in sales over the coming one to two years.
  • Survey participants identified trendy fashion jewellery as the most promising category, with precious jewellery and designer pieces also seen as having significant potential.

The 40th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and the 10th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), successfully brought together more than 4,000 exhibitors from 44 different countries and regions. This year marked the revival of the “two shows, two venues” approach, a first since the outbreak of the pandemic.

These events drew approximately 81,000 buyers from 137 countries and regions. Specifically, the Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show attracted over 31,000 visitors from 125 countries and regions, and the Jewellery Show saw attendance by more than 49,000 individuals from 132 countries and regions. Among the buyers, those from Mainland China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and the United States were notably the most numerous in terms of international visitors, highlighting the global prestige of the shows.

The outlook for the jewellery market remains positive, according to exhibitors and buyers alike. A survey conducted on-site with 1,435 participants revealed that 62.3% expect sales to increase in the next one to two years, 31.3% foresee steady sales, and only 6.4% anticipate a decline.

  • Among those surveyed, 62.3% expect an increase in overall sales within the next 12 to 24 months, while 31.3% predict sales will remain steady, and a mere 6.4% anticipate a decline.
  • Regarding revenue, 44.4% of exhibitors foresee a rise in FOB selling prices this year, with 69.9% expecting an increase in production or sourcing costs.
  • The survey participants identified the Middle East (70.6%), Australia and Pacific Islands (68.6%), India (65.3%), North America (59.2%), and ASEAN (56.3%) as regions with high or very high potential for jewellery market growth over the coming two years.
  • Additionally, the respondents indicated that they are exploring or expanding into new markets, including Mainland China (21.2%), North America (17.3%), Northern and Western Europe (16.2%), ASEAN (15.5%), Japan (12.4%), Hong Kong China (10.9%), and the Middle East (10.7%).

Buyers from Mainland China are vital to the twin shows. “China’s fancy colour diamond market has developed to a relevantly mature state in recent years. We were able to find rare fancy colour diamonds such as violet, orange, pink, blue and green during the show. Although the availability of such diamonds are limited globally, suppliers who specialise in this category do exhibit in the March Hong Kong shows,” said Chen Zuwei, president of Rosy Clouds Colored Diamonds, which specialises in rare and top-quality fancy colour diamonds.

Lu Ying, founder and designer of Shanghai-based Privaguet Jewelry commented, “The exhibitors were from many countries and they were very diverse. They offered a wide range of gemstones, diamonds and jewellery that can meet most of our purchasing needs. The twin shows were very accessible and convenient. I observed more exhibitors from mainland China in this edition. I feel that the Chinese jewellers, both buyers and sellers, have more international vision than previous years.”
