The front and back cover of “Pearls – Their History, Sources, Types and Qualities”.

by Julius Zheng, GIA GG

When I was studying in the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) New York campus in 2001, I found some books by Renée Newman, a well-known gemologist and author in a local bookstore, and immediately I found them interesting and useful. Her books are informative, concise and very clear in structure, which make them very good reference books.

We started exchanging emails in 2020 during Covid-19, and in 2023 I finally met her in person during the conference of Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA)in Las Vegas and the JCK Las Vegas. She is friendly, modest and always busy talking with gemologists, jewelers and dealers.

Renée Newman’s most recent book, Pearls – Their History, Sources, Types and Qualities is more than just a book — it’s a culmination of decades of expertise, passion, and a deep commitment to educating readers about the beauty and intricacies of pearls. For anyone who has ever been enchanted by the nuance in colors and luster of pearls, this book is a must-read. Whether you’re a jewelry enthusiast, a gemologist, or simply someone curious about these little miracles, her latest work offers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of pearls that is as informative as it is inspiring.

A Journey Rooted in Passion and Expertise

Renée Newman’s journey as an author began in 1989 with her first book, The Diamond Ring Buying Guide, which she wrote while working as a gemologist in the bustling jewelry district of downtown Los Angeles. With access to diamonds of all qualities, she was able to photograph them and teach readers how to visually evaluate clarity and cut quality — something that was groundbreaking at the time. The book’s success, coupled with her readers’ hunger for more, led her to write a series of guides on gems, including rubies, sapphires, and pearls. Over 36 years, Renée Newman has authored 16 books, each one building on her mission to help gem-lovers and consumers to have better comprehension of jewelry and gems, and make informed and confident choices in purchases and evaluation.

Her passion for gemology was sparked during her time as an international tour director, where she found herself surrounded by gem-filled stores in Asia and fielding questions from her passengers about what to look for when buying gems. Realizing she didn’t have the answers, she began taking courses at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Santa Monica. This foundation not only gave her the knowledge to answer those questions but also planted the seed for her future as an author. Newman’s books go beyond the basics, offering insights and details that even trade professionals find invaluable. Her latest book on pearls is no exception.

A Comprehensive Exploration of Pearls

Pearls – Their History, Sources, Types and Qualities begins with the chapter “Why are Pearls so Prized?”, a fascinating dive into the cultural and historical significance of pearls. Newman sets the stage with a quote from Roman scholar Pliny the Elder, who declared pearls to hold “the topmost rank of all things of price.” This chapter immediately draws readers into the mystique of pearls, showing how their value and symbolism have evolved across cultures and eras.

From there, Newman takes readers on a journey through the many facets of pearls, starting with the distinction between natural and cultured pearls. She explains their formation, history, and the tests used to differentiate them, providing a solid foundation for understanding the pearl industry. The subsequent chapters delve into the value factors of pearls—luster, surface quality, shape, nacre thickness, color, size, and matching—equipping readers with the tools to evaluate pearls like a professional.

The book also explores the unique characteristics of different types of pearls, including Akoya, South Sea, black, and freshwater pearls, as well as rarer varieties like abalone, conch, and melo pearls. Each chapter is packed with detailed information about the sources, history, and price factors of these pearls, making it an invaluable resource for both buyers and appraisers. Newman doesn’t stop at pearls themselves; she also examines imitation pearls, pearl treatments, and the evolution of pearl jewelry, offering a truly comprehensive view of the pearl world.

What Makes This Book Special

What truly sets Pearls – Their History, Sources, Types and Qualities apart is Newman’s unique ability to combine technical expertise with a personal touch. Her decades of experience as a gemologist and author shine through in every chapter, but it’s her passion for helping readers that makes this book so compelling. The photographs, many of which she took herself, provide a realistic and accurate representation of pearls, making the book an invaluable tool for appraisers, gemologists, and consumers alike. Unlike other resources that rely on computer-generated visuals, Newman’s images offer a high level of detail and authenticity.

The inclusion of Autore Pearls’ detailed images of South Sea pearls and technical diagrams from Dr. Henry Hänni further enriches the book, providing insights that are not available elsewhere. Newman also goes beyond the pearls themselves, tracing the evolution of pearl jewelry with colored gems from the Georgian period to modern times. This historical perspective adds depth to the reader’s appreciation of pearl jewelry and highlights the artistry and craftsmanship behind these timeless pieces.

For consumers, the book is a practical guide to identifying imitation pearls and detecting treatments. Newman strikes a perfect balance between empowering readers with observation tests and advising when advanced testing is necessary. This practical advice, combined with the book’s up-to-date information, makes it an indispensable resource for anyone buying or evaluating pearls.

A Labor of Love

Newman’s decision to create an entirely new book on pearls, rather than reprinting her earlier Pearl Buying Guide, reflects her commitment to providing readers with the most current and comprehensive information available. She describes this book as “like an entire course on pearls,” and it’s hard to disagree. With its detailed chapters, technical insights, and stunning visuals, this book is a comprehensive and up-to-date pearl book on the market.

The book’s structure is thoughtfully designed to cater to a wide range of readers. Beginners will find the explanations clear and accessible, while professionals will appreciate the depth of information and technical details. The glossary, bibliography, and appendix further enhance the book’s value as a reference tool, making it a go-to resource for anyone working with or studying pearls.

Final Thoughts

Renée Newman’s Pearls – Their History, Sources, Types and Qualities is more than just a book — it’s a celebration of pearls and their enduring beauty. It’s a testament to Newman’s dedication to educating and empowering her readers, and it’s a fitting addition to her impressive body of work. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a curious beginner, this book will deepen your understanding and appreciation of pearls, leaving you with a newfound respect for the queen of all gems.

With its blend of historical context, practical advice, and self-explaining photos, Newman’s book is a must-have for anyone who loves pearls. It’s a combination of scholarship and accessibility, making it a joy to read and an invaluable addition to any library. If you’re looking for the definitive guide to pearls, this is it. Newman’s latest work is nothing short of a gem. Meanwhile, I am also inspired by her own story.
