Aesthetic concepts

Today’s market, particularly among younger demographics, is increasingly shifting towards products that are sophisticated and tailored to individual tastes. “While mass-produced jewellery from large chains remains popular, there’s a fast-growing interest in the unique offerings of one-of-a-kind and high-value art jewellery,” stated Grace Tang.

Starlight (Jewellery Handbag). 18K Gold, Diamonds: 8 ctw, Black Onyx, Total weight: 280g.

Which form of art infuses classical nobility and modern dynamism, integrating dazzling brilliance into everyday life? This piece of art jewellery by Grace Tang reshapes splendor with its unique stance. Using lines, colours, and shapes as the brush, and light and materials as the paint, “Starlight” combines them to highlight the beauty of architectural domes and reminiscent of the brilliant stars in the night sky. This piece not only showcases the beautiful fusion of architecture and jewellery but also reflects humanity’s endless pursuit and creativity in beauty.

She advises that, rather than competing with the mass-production, jewellery artists should concentrate on honing their craft and solidifying their creative identity amidst the evolving market. The core design ethos should remain untouched by frequent shifts. She noted that although many jewellery artists have international experience, inspiration is inherently natural and not solely influenced by the blend of Chinese and Western cultures. “Art transcends boundaries, and quality work resonates with a global audience. I don’t consciously categorize my designs as inspired by the East or West. Historically, Oriental and Western cultures have mutually influenced and evolved alongside each other, particularly in contemporary art.” Unique styles mature with experience and accumulation over time, enhancing their value. Since all creations stem from cumulative experiences, they reflect a fusion of human thought and culture, rather than being a mere reproduction of historical elements or an approach based on imitation.

Winter Bird of the Four Seasons Collection (Brooch). Sapphire, tsavorite, diamond, lapis lazuli, enamel, gold, silver.

This masterpiece depicts the unique illusory realm of the transition between summer and autumn, when the lotus blossoms are in their late beauty. The work employs gemstone customization and cutting to outline the kingfisher. It utilizes the high-temperature enamel technique inherited from Chinese traditional intangible cultural heritage, yet the colours inspired by French Impressionism.

Strategies

“Jewellery artists are not only creators but also providers of products and services,” Grace Tang noted. Thus, it’s crucial for jewellery artists to establish a distinct “brand voice” that accurately represents their unique offerings. This branding should be consistently highlighted in all marketing efforts to build momentum.

“Quality work naturally resonates with your clients, yet it must also capture public interest,” Grace Tang further explained. “That’s why it’s vital for jewellery artists to share the stories behind their jewellery pieces, connecting with potential customers. Self-promotion and branding are fundamental.” Jewellery artists have an array of channels to showcase their work, from art exhibitions to global design contests. They can leverage numerous online and offline marketing avenues to target a broader audience, depending on their financial resources and objectives.

She further noted that accomplished jewellery artists play a crucial role in both the selection of raw materials and the production process, collaborating closely with skilled artisans to ensure each design detail is flawlessly executed. They are also responsible for key business decisions related to store location, interior design, and team building. In an effort to promote their brands and expand their presence, jewellery artists have adopted several strategies, including establishing boutiques and galleries in affluent areas. They engage in media campaigns and seek opportunities to feature in newspapers, magazines, and fashion publications. By partnering with various companies and maintaining a presence on platforms like galleries, fashion shows, and design contests, some jewellery artists have significantly increased their visibility.

Establishing Trading Platform

To share her business channel and experience with the peer, Grace Tang established the G&G Gems Trading Service Center, which was officially launched in Sri Lanka on December 19, 2023, marking a significant milestone for Sri Lanka’s gem trade on the global stage. The inauguration ceremony at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo Hotel attracted considerable attention from the government and industry stakeholders, with numerous high-profile guests in attendance, including Hon. Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, M.P. Sri Lanka, the president of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA), and representatives from the embassies of China, France, Russia, among others, all witnessing the beginning of G&G’s journey.

Hon. Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, M.P. Sri Lanka, awarded the official authorization certificate from the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association to G&G co-founders Grace Tang and Imaad Rawoof.

The establishment of G&G aims to integrate Sri Lanka’s gem resources, regulate the gem market, reduce gem trading costs, allow global gem merchants and enthusiasts to confidently purchase Sri Lankan gems, as well as promote the high-end, digitalized and international development of the gem industry. Markar praised G&G for its professionalism, stating that its establishment opens new channels for the global gem market, injects new vitality into the Sri Lankan gem market. It not only provides a trading place for gem practitioners but also strengthens global economic ties.

“Establishing a legal, regulated, safe, and reliable Gems Trading Service Center is critical for the entire gem market, not only elevating Sri Lanka’s position in the gem market but also providing new opportunities for local gem merchants. Going forward, G&G will continue to connect local gem resources with the world, build a healthy and safe platform for gem suppliers and buyers, empower the high-quality development of Sri Lanka’s gem industry, and promote the prosperous development of the global gem market,” Grace Tang concluded.
