This image showcases a classic surface feature of natural diamond trigons, the small triangular etch patterns observed on octahedral crystal faces. These delicate structures are not inclusions in the traditional sense, but rather growth and dissolution features that provide compelling evidence of natural formation.

Trigons form deep within the Earth during episodes of partial dissolution, when a diamond is exposed to corrosive fluids or changing conditions after its initial crystallization. As the crystal is subtly resorbed, triangular pits develop on the surface, typically aligned with the symmetry of the diamond’s octahedral faces. Under magnification, they appear as sharp or slightly rounded triangular depressions, often pointing inward like microscopic arrows.

The geometry and orientation of trigons are closely linked to the internal structure of diamond, and their presence is widely regarded as a reliable indicator of natural origin. While synthetic diamonds may show growth features, well-formed trigons of this type are rarely replicated convincingly in laboratory-grown material.
