South Africa holds approximately 70% of the world’s known platinum reserves, making it a natural cradle for this rare precious metal. Now, this land is writing a new legend—using platinum as a medium to create world-class luxury jewellery and open doors of opportunity to the global stage for a new generation of designers.

At the core of this transformation is PlatAfrica—a platinum jewellery design and manufacturing competition initiated by Valterra Platinum. For more than 27 years, it has continued to discover emerging South African design talent, propel them onto the world stage, and build a bridge between platinum mines and high-end consumer markets. Through PlatAfrica, Valterra Platinum not only consolidates South Africa’s position as a leading global platinum producer, but also helps it emerge as a center of excellence in platinum design, craftsmanship, and innovation.

PlatAfrica is far more than a competition; it carries a threefold mission: accessibility of platinum, cultivation of professional skills, and connection to global markets. Through this program, Valterra Platinum places platinum raw materials in the hands of local designers and students—many of whom are able to truly come into contact with this precious metal for the first time, with no barriers whatsoever. This unique model allows both emerging creators and seasoned designers to freely explore the infinite possibilities of platinum while refining the professional skills required to manufacture this top-tier jewellery material.

Since its founding, PlatAfrica has supported more than a thousand designers and jewellery artisans, imparting valuable design and manufacturing techniques; each year, 60–90 professional participants and 120–150 students and apprentices gain professional experience here. By promoting deeper local processing of domestically mined materials and the transmission of craftsmanship, the value created by this program extends far beyond jewellery itself—it supports individual career development, strengthens communities, and injects vitality into South Africa’s creative economy.

Each year, participants create around an annual theme using platinum as their medium, independently completing an entire piece from inspiration and CAD drawing to handcrafting. The judging criteria focus on creativity, innovation, and outstanding expression of platinum craftsmanship, aiming to inspire designers to continuously explore platinum’s artistic expressiveness and commercial potential.

In 2026, PlatAfrica welcomes a brand-new theme—”Equilibrium”—inviting designers to explore the tension and harmony between opposing forces. This theme requires creators to showcase platinum’s unique appeal while emphasizing a consumer-centered design orientation, encouraging designers to seek balance between artistic expression and wearing comfort, market relevance, and commercial appeal. The final works presented possess both artistic resonance and deep alignment with the needs of contemporary consumers and the luxury market.

Nurturing Africa’s New Generation of Platinum Design Talent

Young designers have always been at the core of PlatAfrica’s mission. The platform provides designers with opportunities to engage with industry leaders, professional judging guidance, mentorship support, and manufacturing experience, as well as valuable resources for connecting with buyers, retailers, and the media. Winning designers not only gain honors and prize money, but also earn the opportunity to showcase their work on the international stage, allowing South African design strength to stand alongside the world’s top jewellery brands.

The program’s impact may perhaps be best demonstrated by the achievements of past winners.

Rob Burton, founder of Cape Town jewellery studio Platandia, won the 2025 PlatAfrica Grand Prize with his platinum work “Eclipse.” His success not only reflects the outstanding strength of talent in South Africa’s jewellery industry, but also once again confirms PlatAfrica’s firm commitment to paving the way for local designers to gain international recognition.

Reflecting on this achievement, Burton said:

“Winning PlatAfrica with ‘Eclipse’ is an extremely high honor for me, and also powerful proof that South Africa possesses world-class design and manufacturing capability. Through PlatAfrica, the Platandia brand was able to appear at top international events such as the Couture Show in Las Vegas and the JGW in Hong Kong, proving to the world that South African jewellery design and craftsmanship can absolutely compete and shine on the global luxury stage.”

Similarly, 2024 winner Ronel Jordaan also regards PlatAfrica as the door that opened international opportunities for her—it was this platform that enabled her work to be exhibited at the Couture Show in Las Vegas.

“Winning PlatAfrica was tremendous recognition of my years of sustained dedication to both craft skills and design thinking. It opened doors of opportunity, such as my work being exhibited at the Couture Show in Las Vegas. It strengthened my credibility as a professional designer and as a university lecturer, and gave me a platform to inspire students—showing them what focus and hard work can bring.”

Some selected PlatAfrica works also have the opportunity to be included in a platinum capsule collection, which uses responsibly sourced diamonds and features blockchain-enabled digital passports. These passports enable future collectors to trace the complete journey of each piece from African mines to finished jewellery, thereby giving each work greater transparency, traceability, and credibility.

From African Soil to Global Demand

This September, PlatAfrica presents its latest award-winning platinum creations at the JGW show in Hong Kong (September 16–20, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre), showcasing the outstanding talent of South African designers to audiences across the global jewellery industry and further fulfilling the program’s firm determination to connect local creative forces with the international luxury market.

Visitors will have the opportunity to closely appreciate the winning designs and view the capsule collection equipped with digital certification, witnessing how South African designers organically combine traditional craftsmanship with innovation, traceability, and the concept of responsible luxury.

A major highlight of this exhibition will be a special panel discussion titled “From Emerging Forces to Global Demand.” This conversation will deeply explore how design excellence can resonate with educational empowerment and industry collaboration to open new opportunities for future growth in platinum jewellery. The panelists include:

· Fahmida Smith – Head of Market Development at Valterra Platinum, PlatAfrica Program Lead
· Josh Helmich – PlatAfrica Competition Judge (2021–2026)
· Lungile Xhwantini – PlatAfrica Winning Designer (2020 & 2023) and Competition Judge (2025 & 2026)
· Ronel Jordaan – 2024 PlatAfrica Winning Designer
· Moderator: Tai Wong – International Platinum Association, PlatAfrica Competition Judge (2023–2026)

They will discuss emerging trends in platinum jewellery, the evolution of consumer demand, and the important role of talent development in driving future markets.

As global consumers increasingly seek authenticity, craftsmanship, and luxury with meaning, PlatAfrica is proving through action that world-class jewellery design can proudly originate from Africa. By providing platinum raw materials, professional skills training, and pathways to international markets, Valterra Platinum is helping local talent grow into success stories that attract global attention, while promoting value-added processing of South Africa’s minerals and showing the world the extraordinary creativity of South Africa’s jewellery industry.

From the depths of the African land to the top stages of global jewellery, PlatAfrica has always conveyed one belief: the future of platinum design is rooted in South Africa, written by South African designers, and blooming brilliantly for the whole world.
