Tourmaline is the birthstone of October.

What are Growth Tubes?

Look closely at tourmaline under the microscope, and you may notice fine, elongated tubes running through the crystal. These growth tubes form during crystal growth and may be hollow or contain fluid or other material. Their direction and appearance vary, creating distinctive patterns within the gemstone.

Why Are They Interesting?

Growth tubes are useful features for gemologists examining tourmaline. When numerous tubes are closely aligned, they can even create a beautiful cat’s-eye effect when the gemstone is cut as a cabochon. The same tiny features that catch our attention under the microscope can contribute to a striking optical effect in a finished gem. A closer look reveals details we might never notice with the naked eye. Discover the hidden features of tourmaline through the AIGS Lab microscope.
