Mr. Francesco Pensabene, Trade Commissioner, ITA Beijing Office, and ITA Coordinator for mainland China and Mongolia told Gem Spectrum in an interview that Italy views China as a strategic partner, emphasizing strong ties with both Hong Kong and mainland China across various sectors, including machinery, food, pharmaceuticals, fashion, and jewelry.
While a 2024 slowdown in Italian exports to China of 3.2% was recorded by the China Customs House, the Eurostat data shows 21.1% increase. Italy maintains a 1.1% market share of China’s imports, ranking as its 23rd supplier. The new growth points are particularly in high-tech and machinery sectors. “Jewelry remains a key Italian export, with global sales rising 37.2% in 2024, reaching nearly €11 billion. However, trade with Hong Kong China saw mixed results, with a slight slowdown (-2% per Eurostat but +1% per other sources). Italy remains the 6th largest jewelry exporter globally, with Hong Kong trade valued at €1 billion. Overall, Italy is confident in a recovery of bilateral trade, driven by high-value sectors like technology and jewelry,” said Mr. Pensabene.
Ms. Paola Bellusci, Trade Commissioner, ITA Hong Kong Office, for Hong Kong China and Macao China added that In 2024, Hong Kong’s imports of Italian jewelry slightly declined compared to the previous year. However, 2023 saw a significant 33% growth. “Averaging the two years, Italy continues to perform well in this strategic market. Jewelry, alongside leather goods, remains a key component of the trade balance between Italy and Hong Kong China, highlighting their importance in bilateral trade,” said Ms Bellusci.

Among the Italian exhibitors is De Simone Fratelli, an Italian family business established in 1855 in Torre del Greco, the legendary town of coral and cameo, on the slopes of Vesuvius.

In the interviews with Gem Spectrum, many other exhibitors in the Italian Pavilion confirmed much improved sentiment from buyers of various countries.
