In 2024, several key trends and changes have been observed within the gem and jewelry sector. Lab-grown diamonds and gemstones have transitioned from niche products to mainstream, with a growing presence in the commercial market. Once primarily recognized within the industry, these products are now gaining awareness among the general public. Consumers outside of the gemological field are increasingly familiar with and considering these synthetic alternatives, as they become more accepted choices for jewelry and other luxury items.

Additionally, there is a growing number of people from across the world considering a career in gemology, particularly among younger generations. These passionate individuals, many of whom have no prior background in the field, are traveling great distances to immerse themselves in the study of gemstones. This youthful energy and enthusiasm are exactly what the industry needs, as they will continue to appreciate and celebrate the extraordinary gifts of nature.

The AIGS (Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences) holds the belief that knowledge is everything. The mission is to share insights gained over the past 47 years, making gemological knowledge more accessible to the next generation.

In 2024, AIGS co-organized the AGJA x AIGS Forum, featuring a presentation on cultured pearls by Rui Galopim de Carvalho, the author of Gempedia—a comprehensive gem glossary produced in collaboration with Rui, AIGS, and Gem-A. This book, the result of over 30 years of work, serves as an invaluable resource for students and gem enthusiasts alike, offering simple yet essential information on a wide range of gemological topics.

Another milestone for AIGS this year was the launch of Gemscapes, a gem inclusion photo book that showcases both natural and synthetic inclusions from 14 countries. Featuring over 400 detailed inclusion photos, this portable book is the culmination of four decades of research and data collection. It serves to promote awareness and understanding within the gem community, benefiting not only professionals but also the younger generation and anyone with a passion for gemstones.

In 2024, AIGS continued to update and enhance its academic offerings, most notably with the comprehensive Accredited Gemologist Diploma program. Beyond the classroom, AIGS is deeply committed to providing students with real-world industry experiences. This includes arranging opportunities for them to buy and sell gemstones at real gem markets, visiting gem treatment and cutting factories, and even taking them to the mines. These hands-on experiences allow students to appreciate the dedication and hard work of the many people who have committed their lives to this industry.

Additionally, support is offered to students who wish to grow their presence and visibility on social media, build valuable networks, and pursue meaningful collaborations. “Creating win-win situations for students and helping them grow both in their careers and businesses is essential,” says Erika Kyi Sin Yu Ya, Communication and Business Development Lead of AIGS. The aim is for students to gain not only practical knowledge from their studies but also benefit from ongoing support in content creation, digital project collaborations, and increased exposure through AIGS platforms.

What drives progress, even during challenging times, is the unwavering support offered within this niche industry. AIGS firmly believes in operating with simplicity and honesty, striving for win-win outcomes for everyone—whether through gemological lab services or educational programs.

As AIGS reflects on 47 years, one lesson stands out: “Honesty and the pursuit of excellence in knowledge sharing are at the heart of what we do,” says Mr. Kennedy Ho, Chairman of AIGS. The commitment to continuous improvement remains strong, with anticipation for the journey ahead.
