Malachite is a copper bearing mineral that is usually banded with differing shades of green in agate-like patterns, which makes it easy to identify. It was recovered from copper mines in Egypt and Israel as early as 3000 BC. Besides being used for jewelry, charms and ornaments, malachite was ground into powder and worn as eye make-up. The same powdered pigment is used by painters under the name of “Mountain Green.” Beautiful yet affordably priced, malachite is sold by the piece as cabochons, beads, figurines, mosaics, boxes, and other decorative objects. Currently the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the major producer of malachite. Other sources include Arizona, Australia, Mexico, Namibia, Russia, Tanzania and Zambia.
